Get Memed, Kid (old post)

Image
Ali Mosslmani, an Aussie teen is attempting to sue three news outlets for defaming him. At first glance this seems like a serious allegation; you might even feel bad for Ali until you hear how he was allegedly defamed. As the story goes, Ali was at the birthday party of a friend when a rather fateful picture was taken This picture, showing Ali on the left, soon when viral. It seemed as if social media users could not get enough of Ali's hilarious mullet. Ali then became the subject of a series of  internet memes that had photo-shopped the picture into creative jokes, all along the theme of making fun of Ali's haircut. These memes did not rest well with Ali however, especially after The Daily Telegraph, Daily Mail Australia, and KIIS radio poked fun of his haircut as well. Ali had had enough, and sued each of the publications, claiming that they portrayed him as a hideously ugly and ridiculous person. Unfortunately for Ali, the trials did not pan out in his favor, and the ...

Keyboard Wars (old post)

After reading the second article on twitter wars I felt almost exasperated. It seemed as if the entire situation was just a small issue that had escalated to a point where it was blown out of proportion. Though the whole situation was likely much more complex and difficult than I realize, I still think that their disagreements would have been much better settled in person rather than over Twitter. Twitter wars involving online personalities/comedians like Wendy's twitter page, youtubers, meme accounts, etcetera are usually light and humorous. However, twitter wars over actual personal conflicts are, in my opinion, extremely childish and pointless, almost as if both sides would rather engage in the adrenaline of a simulated catfight, and rally the support and validation of all those who care to listen in rather than solving the disagreement like mature adults. I myself have had my share of online beef, but I never aired my dirty laundry publicly nor continue...

Jimmy Kimmel Twerking Hoax (old post)

After seeing the youtube clip of the Jimmy Kimmel episode, I was quite impressed at how the video garnered such attention without any support from Jimmy or being intentionally exposed to any large following. Jimmy was able to pull off what I doubt youtube celebrities, who know the ins and outs of the system could do. After thinking back to 2013, it seems that Jimmy had given considerable thought to the content of the video. Making innocently sexualized content was a common ploy to get your video on recommended, and attract clicks from Youtube’s young user base. If I remember correctly, boobs were a common sight in 2013 thumbnails. Combine that with the youtube genre of fails which was so popular at the time and you have yourself the recipe to a viral video. I think that Jimmy created this video as a social experiment, and to see how he could use internet trends to manipulate the system into putting his video onto users recommended list. I don’t think that Jimmy was trying to reveal...

Black Friday Fever (old post)

Image
I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy Black Friday every time it came around. Last year I spend fifty bucks on games alone during the Stream Black Friday sale, which is now even bigger than their famous Steam Summer Sale. Seeing people queuing up in mile-long lines always amused me I've only ever shopped online. The one time I actually went to line up I decided against it once I got there at 8am and saw how long the line was already. After talking with those in the line I discovered that the guys at the front had actually been freezing there since 4am! It was this Black Friday that I also realized how much the act of lining up in the cold does to build the consumer culture that Black Friday relies on. Hell, the store fights are even glorified on TV and YouTube. Guess what I was recommended under the store fight video linked in the original blog post? So in response to the question, I do think that we are encouraged to buy much more than we need, to the point t...
