IKEA Place: A Genius Campaign (old post)
IKEA made great use of new and popular technologies with their app, IKEA Place. IKEA Place was launched in 2017, so unfortunately its nothing new. However, I'm sure that the idea is still just as cool. IKEA Place makes use of AR technology to let users see how specific IKEA products would fit and look in their own apartments and homes. Pretty neat eh? If you don't know, AR(augmented reality) is similar to VR(virtual reality), but still somewhat different.
VR creates an entirely new digital environment around you, whereas AR creates digital objects mapped to your physical environment. Because AR requires far less processing power than VR, mobile devices are very capable of helping you experience it. Technically, snapchat filters are AR, but they're pretty boring compared to other stuff you can do with AR.
KEA Place is genius in my opinion, and redefines the user friendly shopping experience. By using the app before buying, IKEA customers will know exactly what product they want, in exactly the style that will match their home, removing all the stressful guesswork. IKEA's page says that their app is accurate to the millimeter, which is impressive still nearly two years later (consumer electronics can advance tremendously in two years)! Michael Valdsgaard, the Leader of Digital Transformation at IKEA says: "It could eventually be that you put in contact lenses and you don’t need to look at a phone anymore. We’re really right at the beginning of the big bang with AR and understanding just how it can make everyday life better for people." Unfortunately the app is incompatible with my phone so I'll never experience how a king sized bed looks here in the Communications room ( ˃̣̣̥᷄⌓˂̣̣̥᷅ ).
