I Don't Understand Cultural Appropriation (new post)

Image
Now, I know full well what cultural appropriation is, I just don’t understand why it is. In the article we were asked to read, Joy Henderson recounts that she denied a Party City store her business because they were selling costumes inspired by her culture.  I remember another popular instance of outrage over cultural appropriation, this time about a prom dress. This was the girl’s response after receiving an incredible amount of hate over her fashion choice.   “To everyone causing so much negativity: I mean no disrespect to the Chinese culture, I’m simply showing my appreciation to their culture. I’m not deleting my post because I’ve done nothing but show my love for the culture. It's a fucking dress. And it's beautiful.” KEZIAH ON TWITTER What’s more, this tweet was not at all as controversial in China as it was to the outraged twitter SJW’s. I’d like to quote an excerpt from an NY Times article . “It’s ridiculous to criticize this as cultural appropriation,” Zh...

Goodpilled by #MeToo

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've undoubtedly heard about the #metoo movement. If for some reason my blog is the first place you've been online in several years, then welcome! We have a lot of catching up to do! The #metoo movement is a movement empowering people, specifically women, to raise their voices about their experiences of sexual assault and harassment. #MeToo’s mission statement says that the movement is particularly keen to help black women and women of color from lower wealth communities. Interestingly enough, #MeToo Started in 2006, and only gained international exposure recently. While one of #MeToo ’s objectives is to help survivors of sexual violence speak out, they also want to provide psychological support to the survivors, connecting them to organizations that can help them, and create “long term, systemic change” to change societies and bring an end to sexual violence. This is a goal that I believe is far more ambitious and noble than...

IKEA Place: A Genius Campaign (old post)

Image
IKEA made great use of new and popular technologies with their app, IKEA Place. IKEA Place was launched in 2017, so unfortunately its nothing new. However, I'm sure that the idea is still just as cool. IKEA Place makes use of AR technology to let users see how specific IKEA products would fit and look in their own apartments and homes. Pretty neat eh? If you don't know, AR(augmented reality) is similar to VR(virtual reality), but still somewhat different. VR creates an entirely new digital environment around you, whereas AR creates digital objects mapped to your physical environment. Because AR requires far less processing power than VR, mobile devices are very capable of helping you experience it. Technically, snapchat filters are AR, but they're pretty boring compared to other stuff you can do with AR. KEA Place is genius in my opinion, and redefines the user friendly shopping experience. By using the app before buying, IKEA customers will know exactly wha...

What is #WomenShould?(old post)

Image
The "Women Should" movement was an ad campaign started by the organization UN Women due to appalling Google autocomplete results which would be added if the phrase "woman should" was entered in the search bar. When I first saw the campaign I was shocked and in disbelief that people would search these phrases; I had never seen any autocomplete results so taboo. Who would search these queries and why? Something about these ads rubbed me the wrong way. Even if it was thought through, it didn't seem that way. What did they hope to accomplish with this?  As I researched this further I was deeply unsatisfied with what I read about the movement and while I fully support its message I questioned its validity. When I tested for myself if any of these unfortunate autosuggestions would come up none did. In fact, this ad campaign's first effect most likely was to drive traffic toward these negative autocomplete results as people attempted to test these results for...
